Pollutants/Toxics subtopics Alphabetical List of All Topics

Radiation is all around us, emitted by the earth and even by our own bodies. It exists in both natural and man-made forms and has many beneficial uses, including X-rays and the generation of electrical power. However, exposure to high levels of radiation may be harmful to both humans and the environment. Like many chemicals found in the environment, radiation is a carcinogen. It may also cause other adverse health effects, including genetic defects or mental retardation in the children of exposed parents. EPA works with other federal and state agencies to reduce the risk of human exposure to dangerous levels of radiation by managing the disposal of nuclear waste, cleaning up radioactive contaminated sites and monitoring radiation levels in all media. EPA has also played a significant role in developing a contingency plan for radiation accidents and emergencies.
