Lynchburg Escapee Captured in Georgia

Almost four weeks on the run for an elusive Southerland man came to a crashing halt near Savannah, Georgia yesterday. Larry Wayne Dodson, Jr., who escaped from the Blue Ridge Regional Jail in Lynchburg on March 10, was captured after a high speed chase, crash and foot pursuit that recovered the fugitive hiding in a shed at a cell tower in rural Chatham County. Dodson was arrested without further incident.

With a task force comprised of U.S. Marshals, Lynchburg Police, and Blue Ridge Jail Authority investigators hot on his heels, Dodson was tracked to Louisiana several days ago. U.S. Marshals from Lynchburg provided information to Marshals in Louisiana and local law enforcement leading them to Dodson there. Dodson was forced out of his comfort zone, and fled Louisiana in a stolen pickup truck.

At approximately 4 pm on Sunday, a Georgia State Patrol trooper spotted a speeding pickup truck northbound on Interstate 95 near Savannah. A high speed pursuit ensued and the pickup wrecked during the chase. The driver fled the scene into a swamp area and state and local law enforcement converged finding Dodson hiding in a shed a short time later.

Dodson is incarcerated in the Chatham County Jail, in high-security lock down, where he faces felony charges for Fleeing to Elude, Possession of Stolen Property, and Interstate Transportation of Stolen Property, as well as misdemeanor charges for Reckless Driving and Speeding. Following the adjudication on the Georgia charges, he will be extradited back to Virginia to face his original 7 year prison sentence and new felony charges for Escape.

Blue Ridge Jail Authority investigators and Lynchburg Police officers assigned to the U.S. Marshals task force were instrumental in the apprehension of Dodson.
