Global Collaborations in Transportation, Warehousing and Utilities

Inputs: NIOSH Strategic Goals

The Global Collaborations Program addresses the third strategic goal of the NIOSH Strategic Plan 2004 – 2009:

Goal 3: Enhance global workplace safety and health through international collaborations.
  • Take a leadership role in developing a global network of occupational health centers.
  • Investigate alternative approaches to workplace illness and injury reduction and provide technical assistance to put solutions in place.
  • Build global professional capacity to address workplace hazards through training, information sharing and research experience.

The NIOSH Global Collaborations Program is in the process of developing "strategic goals" to guide our research and partnership efforts with the NORA Sector Councils over the next decade. These strategic goals will incorporate the needs of the Sector Councils and of NIOSH in its role as a key global leader in occupational safety and health.

Draft Goals for the NIOSH Global Collaborations Program:

Among the draft goals for the Global Collaborations Program is to Reduce road traffic injuries of workers through global partnerships.

When draft goals are completed, they will be posted on the NIOSH Global Collaborations Program Goals page for review and comment. We will also use the NIOSH eNews to announce that draft goals are available for review.

Draft National Agenda for the Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities Sector:

A draft agenda has been developed by the NORA Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities Sector Council, which is charged with setting national goals to guide research and partnership efforts for the Sector over the next decade. Sector Councils are made up of industry stakeholders and NIOSH scientists. Setting of goals within NIOSH is closely linked to the NORA process; in most cases, NIOSH will select goals it is prepared to address from among those developed by the Sector Council.

The Draft National Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities Agenda is available for public comment.

The draft road safety goal for the Global Collaborations Program, cited above, would clearly be relevant to the Global Collaborations Program; the Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities Sector; and to other sectors which rely heavily on road transportation, such as Wholesale and Retail Trade, Services, and Manufacturing. The advantage of this approach is that resources of a number of programs can be applied toward accomplishing an important mutual goal.
