Joint Utility Discount Day

Several thousand low-income residents of the District participated in the annual Joint Utility Discount Day (JUDD) at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center on Sept. 30 to apply for discounts and financial assistance on all of their utility bills at a single location. Read more.


District Breaks Ground on Bike Station

Mayor Fenty, Department of Transportation (DDOT) Interim Director Frank Seales, Jr. and Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for the District's Bicycle Transit Center at Union Station. The 1,700 square foot facility will be the first of its kind on the East Coast and is expected to open for business in spring 2009. Read more.


DPR Joins Pop Warner Football League

The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) announced that their youth football program has joined the Pop Warner Little Scholars Football League. Each weekend, DC Pop Warner football games will be played on nine football fields across the District. Read more.


Improvements in HIV/AIDS Treatment

Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and DC Appleseed Executive Director Walter Smith released a fourth “report card” that shows the government’s performance in 11 areas around HIV/AIDS in which the District has substantially improved to make an impact on the epidemic.

As a follow-up to DC Appleseed’s August 2005 report, HIV/AIDS in the Nation’s Capital: Improving the District of Columbia’s Response to a Public Health Crisis, DC Appleseed has periodically issued report cards to monitor the District’s progress. Read more.


Renovations for Bowen ES

The District showcased construction progress the city has made in completing renovating Bowen Elementary School, the relocation site for the Metropolitan Police Department’s First District Station.

Once MPD First District (1D) Station moves from its current location, the city will begin construction on the Consolidated Forensic Laboratory (CFL), a lab that will bring together the functions of public safety, forensic science and public health into a single world-class, state-of-the-art facility. New Fort Reno Park

Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) Director Clark E. Ray, Ward 3 Councilmember Mary Cheh and members of the Ward 3 community took part in a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the beginning of the redevelopment of Fort Reno Park. Fort Reno is one of seven new DPR “Premier Fields” to be developed in the District of Columbia. Read more.
