Description:

Objective:

The objective of this proposal was to provide a series of infrastructure investments to enhance the strength of Vermont based research activities related to the environment. These activities are managed by the Vermont EPSCoR program, which reports to the Vermont Technology Council, thus ensuring connectivity to state goals.

Approach:

The Strategic Improvement Plan (SIP) provided support in four areas. The Stimulus Grant Program provided funds to develop exploratory background data in environmental research projects. The post-doctoral award provides high-level professional personnel for enhancement of an established research group. The SBIR Phase (0) awards seek to stimulate private sector research activities in relevant environmental issues. Diversity efforts are focused on support of a diverse set of scientists in the SIP and SEER components as well as undergraduates who are members of unrepresented groups to campus for potential graduate recruitment.

Expected Results:

The SIP projects will generate an array of active research projects in areas of interest in and relevance to EPA. These activities will partner with the University's focus on research on the environment as one of its core scholarly activities. Additional efforts to foster the growth of companies in environmental interest areas will be of long-term benefit to the state.
