News Media Community

New Directions from the Field: Victims’ Rights and Services for the 21st Century, Bulletin #14: News Media Community

This bulletin notes that the news media play a significant role in public safety, but media coverage sometimes raises legitimate concerns about victims’ rights to privacy. Timely and sensitive coverage of victims’ cases can be helpful; coverage of specific cases and emerging crimes also has contributed to positive changes in public policy. The News Media’s Coverage of Crime and Victimization (video)

The news media provide a necessary and invaluable public service, but their work can often result in the painful revictimization of victims. This 26-minute video explores how the news media tend to cover crime and victimization, what can be done to help victims effectively deal with sometimes insensitive coverage, and how victim service providers can work together with members of the media to promote timely, sensitive media coverage. February 2000; Call for shipping and handling fees (NCJ 178239); OVC.
