Can my loans be partially discharged?

Yes, in some cases your loan(s) can be partially discharged. Below are the two scenarios when your loan(s) can be partially discharged.

  • If a Consolidation loan was obtained jointly by a married couple, the amount of the Consolidation loan that may be discharged if one of the borrowers dies or becomes totally and permanently disabled is equal to the portion of the Consolidation loan that represents the deceased or disabled borrower's obligation.
  • For Direct Consolidation loans that include a Federal PLUS and/or Direct PLUS loan(s) borrowed for a student that has died, the portion of the Consolidation loan attributable to the student that has died may be discharged.
