What happens to my loans if I go back to school?

If your loan is in its 6 month grace period, and you are still enrolled as at least a half-time student, your enrollment records can be updated to reflect your continued enrollment. You can do this by:

  • contacting your school to find out if they will notify us electronically of your new enrollment information

    OR
  • by obtaining a student deferment form. Complete the top portion of the form, sign it and have your school complete the bottom certification portion of the form.

When this form is returned to us by your school or when we receive electronic notification from your school, we will update our records to show your in-School status and reinstate your 6 month grace period.

If your grace period has expired and you have entered repayment on your loan you may still be eligible to postpone your payments with an in-School deferment form if you begin re-attending an eligible school on at least a half-time basis. You can obtain an in-School deferment form by visiting the Deferment Forms page in the Forms section of our Web site.

If you are attending school on a "less than half-time basis" and think you might have difficulty repaying your loans there are other options to postpone payments such as a forbearance form.
