If I had loans discharged due to Total and Permanent Disability and then apply for a Direct Loan, do I have to repay my discharged loans?

For loans discharged prior to July 1, 2001, if you recover from a disability and subsequently apply for and receive additional Direct Loans, you do not have to repay your discharged loans. However, for loans discharged on or after July 1, 2001, the regulation is different. If you have loan(s) discharged during that period, you must reaffirm your discharged loan(s) if you receive a new Direct Loan within 36 months from the date you became totally and permanently disabled as certified by a physician.
