An unemployment rate is the number of unemployed persons as a percentage of the civilian labor force. The map uses natural breaks in the distribution to organize the data into groups of common values.

This map shows the unemployment rate in each of the ARC counties. Appalachian unemployment rates range from 3.1% to 14.2%. The Appalachian average is 5.9%. The U.S. average is 6.0%. For a list of county data by state, see the downloadable Excel file.
