Population Density Rates in Appalachia, 1990

Population density is a measure of the dispersion of people, which is calculated by dividing the 1990 census population by the 1990 land area in square miles.

This map shows people per square mile in each of the ARC counties. Population density ranges from six to 1,830 people per square mile, with an Appalachian Region average of 104.5. The U.S. average is 70.3. For a list of county data by state, see the downloadable Excel file.
