About the Office: As the principal litigator for the United States of America in the Southern District of Illinois, the United States Attorney prosecutes all criminal and civil cases brought by the Federal government and defends the United States when it is a party in a civil case. The Southern District of Illinois is committed to developing and maintaining strategic partnerships among federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to ensure the effective deployment of resources to positively impact the quality of life for all District residents. There are approximately 26 Assistant United States Attorneys in the Criminal Division and 7 Assistant United States Attorneys in the Civil Division. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Illinois represents the United States in matters arising in the 38 southernmost counties of Illinois. The main office is in Fairview Heights, Illinois, which is part of the greater St. Louis metropolitan area. A branch office is located in Benton, Illinois. The two federal courthouses in the District are located in East St. Louis, Illinois, and Benton, Illinois.

Responsibilities and Opportunity Offered: This vacancy is in the Criminal Division. Assistant United States Attorneys in the Criminal Division are responsible for all federal criminal investigations and prosecutions within the District. They are also responsible for advising the United States Attorney on criminal law related matters and serving as liaison with other Department of Justice components regarding criminal cases.

Qualifications: All attorneys will be considered, however, the ideal candidate is expected to have significant writing ability, trial experience and other prosecuting skills.

Required qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, and be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of any State, territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia, and have post-J.D. litigation experience. Applicants must be active members in good standing of the bar. Applicants must demonstrate strong writing skills, analytical ability, good judgment, and excellent communication and courtroom skills.

Preferred qualifications: Applicants must exhibit the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff, and client agencies. Applicants should have superior research and writing abilities, strong academic credentials and good judgment. While not required, federal experience (including, but not limited to, a federal judicial clerkship) is desirable.

Travel: Occasional travel is required.

Salary Information: Assistant U. S. Attorneys' pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number years of professional attorney experience. The range of pay for this job is $60,000.00 to $85,000.00 including locality pay. A full package of benefits is authorized for this position.

Location: The duty position will be at the main Fairview Heights, Illinois office.

Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses will not be authorized. Assistant United States Attorneys must reside within 25 miles of the district to which he or she is appointed.
