The Serve America Act goes into effect on October 1. We will be spending the coming weeks and months planning for implementation, and are very interested in getting your input as we move ahead. As the people who make service happen in communities everyday, you have vital insights about how we can make the most of the extraordinary opportunities presented by this new legislation. We also need your input as we develop the Corporation’s strategic plan for the next five years. |

Earlier today President Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act into law. He was joined by First Lady Michelle Obama, the Vice President and Dr. Jill Biden, which demonstrates more powerfully than words this Administration’s commitment to national service. It was the most exciting moment of my nine years on the board of the Corporation, and I know it’s the beginning of many great things to come. |

President to Sign the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act |

Greetings at the start of a particularly historic National Volunteer Week. Tomorrow President Obama is scheduled to sign the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act into law in a 4 p.m. ceremony at the SEED School of Washington, DC. Later, in a sign of his strong and continuing commitment to national service as a solution to the nation’s challenges, President and Mrs. Obama also plan to participate in a service event oriented toward Earth Day. Later this week comes Global Youth Service Day. And on Friday, I’m very excited to be in Albuquerque to swear in the first large cohort of 200 AmeriCorps VISTA members funded by the Recovery Act. |

President Obama is expected to sign the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act into law in the coming days. This is a very exciting time for the Corporation and the entire national service and voluntary sector, representing both the culmination of years of hard work and the start of a new era of national service in America. |

President Barack Obama today made the following statement on the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act: "I congratulate the House on passing the bipartisan Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act. This is legislation that will usher in a new era of service in America, and I look forward to signing it into law when I return to Washington."

House Passes Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act |

Earlier today, the House of Representatives voted on final passage of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act. Both chambers of Congress accelerated their coordinated work on the bill after the President called for its passage in his first address to a joint session of Congress just five weeks ago. The bill now heads to President Obama for signature. In a statement released by the White House, President Obama congratulated the House and called “on all Americans to stand up and do what they can to serve their communities, shape our history and enrich both their own lives and the lives of others across this country.” |

In early April we will take another important step toward improving the speed and reliability of our technology environment by moving our production systems to new servers at the Corporation’s headquarters. In order to make this upgrade, our systems – including the My AmeriCorps Portal, Recruitment System, eGrants and eSPAN – will be unavailable from 8:00 PM EST, Friday, April 3 through 8:00 AM EST, Monday, April 6. |
