Biographical Sketch:

Bill Vernieu received his B.S. in Biology at the University of Utah in 1979. He worked for the Bureau of Reclamation as a Physical Scientist in the Upper Colorado Regional Office in Salt Lake City, UT from 1982 to 1990. In 1990 he moved to Flagstaff, AZ as a hydrologist for the Glen Canyon Environmental Studies Office. He has worked since 1996 as a hydrologist for the USGS Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center in Flagstaff, AZ.

His work focuses on the water quality of Lake Powell and Glen Canyon Dam releases as it relates to dam operations. He currently directs the GCMRC's long-term water quality monitoring program on Lake Powell and maintains a database of nearly 40 years worth of water quality information.

Project List

  • Lake Powell Long-term Monitoring Program Privides primary direction and coordination of Lake Powell long-term water quality monitoring program. This consists of monthly measurement and sampling of Glen Canyon Dam forebay water quality conditions and quarterly reservoir-wide water quality surveys. Web-based reports are generated for each sampling effort and data is stored and maintained in the WQBD MS Access database.
  • Data Management of Long-term Monitoring Data Designed, developed and populated relational database in MS Access and SAS of water quality data from Lake Powell long-term monitoring program, Glen Canyon tailwater continuous monitoring and Grand Canyon thermal monitoring.
  • Near-shore and Longitudinal Warming of Colorado River in Grand Canyon Conducted research in water year 2000 under steady flows to determine extent of warming in various near-shore habitats and longitudinal warming of Colorado River through Grand Canyon. Report in progress.
