Kathy Hardy, born in Fresno, California, is the oldest of three children. Growing up, she moved a lot, living primarily in northern California and northern Virginia. She graduated from the University of Virginia in 1980 with a BA in Anthropology.
She held temporary jobs with the USGS at their headquarters in Reston, Virginia; with National Park Service YCC programs in Florida and Virginia; and as an archaeologist at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park in West Virginia, and on the Malheur National Forest in Oregon.
Her first permanent jobs were as an archaeologist on the Sierra National Forest and the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.
She then branched out into jobs managing recreation, wilderness, lands, special uses, and minerals on national forests in the Sawtooth NF in Idaho, Bridger-Teton NF in Wyoming and White River NF in Colorado.
She has worked in manager positions since 1998, as a district ranger in Leadville Colorado, and Placerville, CA and then as deputy forest supervisor on the Stanislaus National Forest in Sonora, CA. Major project accomplishments were focused on reducing hazardous fuels, completing range allotment and travel management plans, and administering a variety of special use permits. She also served on a Type 2 interagency incident management team for six years as the lead information officer.
