Utah Wild Horse & Burro Festival

11th Annual Utah
Wild Horse & Burro Festival
Salt Lake County Equestrian Park
May 15 & 16, 2009

WELCOME and THANK YOU for your interest in the 11th Annual Utah Wild Horse and Burro Festival. The festival begins Friday, May 15 at 4 p.m. and runs through Saturday, May 16. Performance classes begin at 4:00 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The primary goal of the horse show is to learn and have fun. Another goal is to give you the opportunity to demonstrate what a wild horse can accomplish when given proper care and training. This is a BLM wild horse, burro and mule show requiring all animals to have a US BLM Freeze Mark and proof of Certificate of Title or Adoption Papers.

5th Annual Wild Horse Festival of Learning will be held the weekend before the festival on May 8–10 at the IWHBA Learning Center in Erda, UT. Thirty participants will have the pleasure of working one on one with a professional trainer to gets hands on experience with a wild horse. The wild horses that are being used for the Festival of Learning will be available at the adoption on Friday at 6:30 p.m. more information regarding the Wild Horse Festival of Learning, visit www.iwhba.org or contact Janet Tipton at 801.554.4431 or iwhba@wirelessbeehive.com.

New this Year:   There are a few changes this year. The most exciting is this year all contestants will have an opportunity to compete in the Extreme Trail Challenge Class. Youth, Novice & Adult contestants will have the opportunity to show your horse off in a BIG way…here’s your chance!! There will be 10-15 obstacles, 30 seconds – 1 minute (depending on difficulty) per obstacle, and multiple judges, with a 3 refusal limit.  The obstacles in this event will not be found in the judged trail class. This will be one challenge you won’t want to miss, whether it be competing or watching.   This year, the Equine Citizenship Class is certificate only, no point will be given for this class AND Lunge Line in Hand is 2 minutes instead of 3 minutes. Those who compete in the Suitability for Dressage, the rider is allowed to have a caller, a caller is someone who calls the pattern to the rider as they ride.

Healthy Horse and Burro: We want everyone to be comfortable knowing they are in the company of healthy horses. You must have a current health certificate for each animal. A current Coggins test certificate is not required for in-state travel, however, for those coming from another state, Utah requires a current Coggins Test.  No exceptions-No papers-No entry.

Adoption: The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will have 20 select halter and saddle started wild horses and 3 handled burros. They can be viewed starting Friday at noon in the outdoor arena with an adoption being held on Friday at 6:30 p.m. All animals will be adopted using the silent bid process. Any animals that are not adopted during the adoption will be available on a First Come First Served for $125.00, then Adopt-a-Buddy for $25.00. Contact the Salt Lake Wild Horse & Burro Center for more information about the adoption and an application toll-free 877.224.3956.
