North Dakota Field Office

The North Dakota Field Office manages over 4.1 million acres of mineral estate in the western one-third of the state and about 58,000 acres of public land, mostly in Dunn and Bowman Counties.

The office manages approximately 1,700 oil and gas leases. In 2006, oil and gas operators produced about $12.3 million dollars of oil and gas revenue. About $6.2 million of that was returned to the state. The field office has six producing federal coal leases. In 2006, the leases produced approximately three million tons of coal and generated $743,000 in royalties, half of which were returned to the state.

Recreation opportunities include the historic Schnell Recreation Area near Richardton, which includes three miles of hiking trails and six primitive campsites.

The public lands have yielded important scientific fossil discoveries, including dinosaurs, catfish, sharks, and rhinoceros. The North Dakota Field Office also holds wild horse and burro adoptions.
