San Francisco Maritime Volunteer Eugene Backlund applies a fresh coat of paint and stain to the bowsprit of the C. A. Thayer. The historic lumber schooner returned in April, 2007 after three years of extensive rehabilitation at a local shipyard. Gene joined the Volunteers in Parks (VIP) program in 2002. He has logged nearly 2,500 hours of service and remains one of the park’s most dedicated volunteers.

Did You Know?
San Francisco Maritime is the only NPS site that has a cable car turnaround adjacent to the park. Riders disembark and workers push the cars around on the track to position them for the next journey back up steep Hyde Street.
