Half of All Mothers With Infants Return To Labor Force
After Giving Birth, Says Census Bureau Report

In 1995, 55 percent of women aged 15 to 44 were in the labor force within
a year of giving birth, according to a new report released today by the
Commerce Department's Census Bureau.

The report, Fertility of American Women: June 1995 (P20-499),
provides fertility data by age, sex, race, marital status, education,
employment, occupation and income for June 1995.

     Among the highlights:

   -	Women 15 to 44 years old had an average of 1.2 children each.

   -	About 42 percent of women 15 to 44 years old were childless in 1995.

   -	Of the 22.8 million women who were never married at the time of the
survey, 21 percent had given birth to at least one child.

   -	There were 6.1 million foreign-born women 15 to 44 years old who had
an average of 1.6 children each.

Detailed tables are available on the Internet at
http://www.census.gov/population/www/socdemo/fertility.html. Paper copies
(PPL-74) are available from the Census Bureau's Public Information Office.

The data were collected in the 1995 June Current Population Survey. As
with all surveys, data are subject to sampling and other sources of error.
