This proposal from an expert set of investigators would form the basis of the Bay Area Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Center to address the concerns about environmental impact on mammary gland development during critical windows of exposure. Novel approaches to studying the impact of environmental exposures on the interactions between epithelial cells and stromal cells were proposed. Normal and cancer-prone mice will be examined during varied stages of development to determine the effects of exposure to multiple stressors and will attempt to develop more sensitive screens for carcinogenicity. In concert with these investigations, an epidemiological multiethnic study will examine and follow through puberty a cohort of 7 – 8 year old girls from the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan. The Community Outreach and Translation Core will involve organizations in San Francisco and Marin County and will provide interactions with the engaged community and provide a means for feedback of concerns to the investigators.
