Updates on Fire
The fire was inactive on April 25th and 26th.

Overview
The Cuates Fire was started by lightning and originally consisted of two seperate ignitions. One stopped spreading at 1.5 acres, whereas the second continued to burn. Cuates is Spanish for "twins".

Last 24-hour Activity
Fire was active throughout the day with low humidites and winds 5-8 mph.

Strategy
Remove fuels around values to be protected. Monitor fire activity.

Vegetation Affected
Arid shrublands (includes sagebrush)

Benefits of the Burn
This natural ignition is restoring fire to the sotol grasslands found in the Chihuahuan Desert of Big Bend NP.

Values to be Protected
Telephone Poles, Environmental Quality Monitoring Station, K-Bar ranch house.
