These tabulations result from NSF's Survey of Federal Funds for Research and Development, for fiscal years 1999-2001, and from earlier surveys in this series. (See also Federal Funds for Research and Development: Fiscal Years 1999, 2000, and 2001, Volume 49.) They reflect the research portion of research and development (R&D) funding levels as reported by Federal agencies. Totals in these tables are given in obligations for research performed at universities and colleges by field of science and engineering, and selected agency. The research obligations data are further categorized according to basic research and applied research by field of science and engineering.
