JACKSON , Miss. -- State, federal, local and voluntary agencies are working in partnership to speed help to Mississippi residents as they continue their recovery from Hurricane Katrina. Families, individuals, business owners, government entities and school districts are receiving assistance to help them rebuild their lives.

Under the direction of FEMA, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has installed a lmost 48,000 temporary roofs in three months through Operation Blue Roof. FEMA's Operation Blue Roof program allows residents to return to their homes while repairs are being made and greatly reduces the need for more expensive temporary housing . The Operation Blue Roof program is 99 percent complete.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program.  FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003 .
