Disaster Recovery Centers Reopen As Weather Threat Ends

JACKSON, Miss. -- Eleven Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) in Mississippi that were temporarily closed as a weather precaution reopened to the public Sunday. In addition, three new centers have begun operating in Hattiesburg, Laurel and McComb.

Nine of the Disaster Recovery Centers in Mississippi's southernmost counties were closed Friday as Hurricane Rita churned toward the Gulf Coast. In addition, two Disaster Recovery Centers -- in Jackson and Purvis -- were closed Saturday because of tornado watches and warnings.

"Once the threat of severe weather had passed, we were ready to resume operations," said Robert Latham, director of the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.

The locations of the new centers are:

Laurel

Existing centers -- temporarily closed because of Hurricane Rita but reopened Sunday -- are located in Biloxi, Gulfport, Moss Point, Ocean Springs, Pascagoula, Pass Christian, Picayune, Poplarville and Waveland.

Hours for Disaster Recovery Centers are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week until further notice.
