ORLANDO, Fla. -- U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials announced today that disaster assistance has been expanded to make 12 Florida counties eligible for federal funds to rebuild or restore essential public facilities damaged by Hurricane Dennis.

Also, three more counties – Jefferson, Leon and Liberty – are now eligible to receive help under the Public Assistance program. They join Bay, Calhoun, Escambia, Franklin, Gulf, Holmes, Monroe, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Wakulla, Walton and Washington, 12 of the original counties approved for Public Assistance.

In addition to emergency services and debris removal, these 15 counties are now eligible for funds from FEMA for the repair and replacement of damaged roads and bridges, utilities, water control facilities, buildings and equipment and parks and recreation areas.

This expanded public assistance allows FEMA to provide state and local agencies and certain non-profit organizations in these counties with funds for qualified projects. FEMA pays 75 percent of the cost of projects and the state and/or applying agency is responsible for the remaining 25 percent.

Jackson County, one of the original counties declared eligible for public assistance funding, is eligible for emergency services and debris removal costs related to the storm.
