NOAA Ship MCARTHUR

Laboratory Spaces

The McARTHUR is equipped with an electronics shop, a machine shop, and a bosun's shop. Each shop is supported with qualified personnel and is able to complete repairs to, and on occasion modify, scientific sampling equipment at sea. This capability has enabled adapting specialized equipment and fabricating damage parts to ensure project completion. In addition to support shops, the McARTHUR has a total of 3 laboratory spaces that can be utilized by scientific personnel. Any anticipated needs should be discussed with the Command prior to a cruise. For spacial information on scientific labs, click on the desired space to view the layout and description.

Oceanography Lab

Diagram of the Oceanography LabThe Oceanography Lab (also referred to as the O-lab or Oceo Lab) is approximately 150 sq. feet and is located on the starboard side, just forward of the fantail on the main deck level. This space is the primary wet processing lab for samples. The O-lab has direct access onto the fantail through a double wide water-tight door. Direct TSG feed, SCS, Navtrek and video output are also available.

Other features include: network hook-up capabilities, limited storage space for scientific supplies, hazmat storage locker, small refrigerator for scientific samples, fume hood, air compressor, fresh and salt water supply, sink, counter top, weather-tight doors, non- regulated electrical power, regulated ("clean") electrical power, telephone, fluorescent lighting

Instrument Lab

Diagram of the Instrument LabThe Instrument Lab (also referred to as the I-lab) is a approximately 150 sq. feet air-conditioned space and is located on E-deck on the port side. The I-lab supports a general purpose shipboard PC and there is counter space for a scientific PC. The data acquisiton PC for the thermosalinograph (TSG), the ship's video entertainment equipment and 2 staionary exercise bicycles are also located in the I-lab. Shelves are available for scientific storage.

Other features include: air-conditioned, network hook-up capabilities, limited storage space for scientific supplies, non- regulated electrical power, regulated ("clean") electrical power, telephone, fluorescent lighting

Plot Room Lab

Diagram of the Plot Room The Plot Room is an air-conditioned space located on F-deck directly aft of the bridge. The deck unit for the Seabird 911 Plus CTD Rosette sampler, 2 Magnavox GPS receivers, remote readouts for the Simrad and Knudsen echosounders and RDI Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) are located in this space. Equipment rack, table top and desk space are available for mounting gear and planning operations. The shipboard Scientific Computer System (SCS) is also contained in this space. SCS uses a system of sensors, including position, depth, meteorologic sensors, wind and temperature. The Plot Room supports a shipboard PC and 2 printers and will accommodate additional scientific PC's.

Other features include: air conditioning, network hook-up capabilities, regulated power, telephone, 1 computer work station, fluorescent lighting
