Lassen Volcanic National Park
Park Uses Portable Information Display to Inform about Fire

At Lassen Volcanic National Park this past summer, Fire had great success when they chose to erect a portable fire information display. This fire information display explained all about the burn piles across the road for the next mile going towards the south. The text in the upper right hand corner of the display (below) was written by fuels supervisor, Matt Snider.

According to Scott Isaacson, Fire Education, Prevention and Information Specialist at Lassen Volcanic National Park, "it was a very effective way to explain to visitors what we are doing out there." Also on the display were pictures of each of the park's successful prescribed fire projects completed in 2004: Manzanita Lake Rx Fire 611 acres, Butte Lake Rx Fire 534 acres.

The park is planning to continue to use the signs in future fire seasons.

Text on the fire information display:

The Tepee shaped piles you see on the east side of the road have been built as part of the preparation for a prescribed fire scheduled for fall 2005.

Firefighters removed standing dead trees (often called snags), low hanging limbs, and thickets of small trees in order to reduce fire intensity along the boundary of the area that will be burned.

The piles are constructed in such a way that they will shed snow and rain, keeping the inside of the pile dry so they can be burned during rainy or snowy weather.

By reducing the fuels close to the edge of a prescribed fire unit, firefighters can maintain control of prescribed fires, using them as a tool to decrease hazardous fuels, reintroduce fire into a fire dependent landscape and maintain forest health.
