Whiskeytown National Recreation Area
Whiskeytown and Partners Reach 5,600 Students in Prevention Efforts to Local Schools

For two weeks in October 2007, in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week, the Shasta County Prevention Officers Association, an interagency group of local, state and national fire agencies, presented fire prevention programs to 25 Shasta County schools. These programs reached over 5,600 children from kindergarten to fourth grade.  Staff from Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, United States Forest Service, Cal Fire, and several city agencies all participated jointly in providing these hands on educational programs to area children.

The group met each morning for two weeks and caravanned to 3 to 4 schools each day to present a 30-minute fire prevention program. Special guests included Smokey Bear and Sparky the Fire Dog. The program focused on teaching children not to play with matches, how to get out of the house during an emergency, where to go, when to call 911, who comes to help, and what to do when your clothes catch on fire. These programs involved both students and teachers in hands-on demonstrations.

Firefighters present a prevention program to students.

The Shasta County Prevention Officers Association is committed to fire prevention and is proud of the fact that it is an interagency organization that is dedicated to keeping children fire safe.
