SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- More than $3.6 million in federal disaster assistance grants has been approved so far by the Federal Emergency Management Agency for Illinois residents who suffered damages and losses during the June 1 and continuing severe storms and flooding.

To date, 1,916 homeowners and renters from the designated counties have applied for disaster assistance.

Anyone who has applied for disaster assistance and has received a disaster-loan application from the SBA is urged to complete and return it as soon as possible. If SBA determines that a homeowner or renter is ineligible for a loan, that applicant will be referred to FEMA for other possible grant assistance.

In addition to federal disaster grants and loans, Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) now is available for workers in Illinois' 18 designated counties. Those counties are Adams, Calhoun, Clark, Coles, Crawford, Cumberland, Douglas, Edgar, Hancock, Henderson, Jasper, Jersey, Lake, Lawrence, Mercer, Rock Island, Whiteside and Winnebago. Visit your local Illinois workNet Center/Employment Services Office or contact the Illinois Department of Employment Security at (312) 793-5700 for more information on DUA.

To help homeowners, renters and business owners with their applications for assistance, FEMA and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) now have open seven Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) throughout the state. Thus far, 458 Illinois residents have visited the DRCs for face-to-face meetings with disaster recovery specialists.
