FEMA Pays More Than $6.5 Million In Winter Storm Aid

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has obligated more than $6.5 million to reimburse state and local governments in New Hampshire for costs incurred in three snow storms that hit the state earlier this year, according to disaster recovery officials. Total aid for the storms is $6,892,023.87.

The funds were allocated through FEMA’s Public Assistance program. President George W. Bush declared the emergencies after a request from Governor John Lynch following the storms.

JANUARY STORM DAMAGE

More than $3.5 million has been approved to help pay for costs of the heavy snow and high winds on Jan. 22-23. The total is $3,658,114.66.

Nine counties and the state were eligible for aid. They are Belknap, Carroll, Cheshire, Grafton, Hillsborough, Rockingham, Merrimack, Strafford and Sullivan. The state and county breakdown is:

FEBRUARY STORM DAMAGE

In addition, FEMA has obligated more than $1 million to help pay for costs of the heavy snow and high winds on Feb. 10-11, according to disaster recovery officials. The total is $1,121,727.20.

Five counties and the state qualify for aid: Carroll, Cheshire, Coos, Grafton and Sullivan. The breakdown is:

MARCH SNOW STORM

More than $2 million has been approved to help pay for costs of the snow removal after the storm on March 11-12, according to disaster recovery officials. The total is $2,112,182.01.

Five counties and the state were eligible for aid. The counties are Carroll, Cheshire, Hillsborough, Rockingham and Sullivan. The breakdown is:

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA’s continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
