NWS Special Emphasis Program at WFO Riverton

The National Weather Service Office in Riverton celebrated Disability Employment Awareness Month by having a meeting that included a brief history in the evolution of Disability Employment Awareness Month, followed by a guest speaker, Kris Snyder. Kris answered all questions relating to working and living as a disabled American in Riverton. He described his successful vending machine business, which he has run since 2004, and for which he was awarded the 2006 Employee of the Year Symon Award by the Riveron/Lander Business Leadership Network.
The National Weather Service Office in Riverton celebrated Women's History Month by having a meeting that included a brief history in the evolution of Women's History Month, followed by a guest speaker, Dr. Catherine Vandemoer. She gave a presentation about the Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone tribes' plight regarding their water rights in the Wind River Indian Reservation. Dr. Vandemoer, after a career in water resource management, which included working for NOAA, created her own business, Watershed Resources Incorporated. She is the President and CEO of the company and is a consultant for water resource and watershed management. 
The National Weather Service Office in Riverton celebrated Black History Month by having a meeting that included a brief history in the evolution of Black History Month, followed by a guest speaker, LaVertha Gotier, who shared her insights and experiences. She recalled times of being discriminated against when traveling with her family across the Deep South in the 1950s. Even as recently as the late 1970s, her family was denied housing because of the color of their skin. Despite these setbacks, LaVertha always kept a positive outlook on life and was determined to lead by example. One of her many accomplishments was becoming mayor of Worland, Wyoming in 2000. - NWS Diversity Homepage
