ORLANDO, Fla. -- Floridians affected by Hurricane Dennis who have not yet registered for federal and state disaster assistance have only two weeks to call the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency to register.

Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005, is the disaster assistance registration deadline.

“As the deadline approaches, we encourage homeowners, renters and business owners who sustained losses from Dennis to register for assistance,” said State Coordinating Officer Craig Fugate with Florida’s State Emergency Response Team (SERT). “Don’t disqualify yourself by not applying. Give us a chance to help you.”

FEMA’s toll-free registration number is 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for those who are speech- or hearing-impaired. Applicants can also register online at www.fema.gov.

“If a person has questions about their registration or the assistance available, FEMA is just a telephone call away,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Justin DeMello with FEMA. “Telephone lines are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Eastern Daylight Time.”

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA’s continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
