State Birth
Defects Tracking Systems
CDC guides and funds states to set-up and
improve their systems to track birth defects. Birth defects tracking
systems are vital for monitoring and detecting trends, providing
information to find causes of birth defects, and planning and measuring
the effects of prevention activities.
Congressionally mandated in 1998, CDC carries out programs to collect
data on birth defects and provide information to the public about the
prevention of birth defects. CDC does this by awarding grants to 15
states to track major birth defects and use the data for prevention and
referral of affected children to needed services. In addition to the 15
states funded for tracking, CDC funds 8 Centers for Birth Defects
Research and Prevention (CBDRP).
