Pahohoe lava moves across black sand beach at Kamoamoa, Kilauea Volcano, Hawai`i

Pahoehoe flows spread across the black sand beach and small bay at Kamoamoa two days after lava entered the sea for the first time since activity returned to Pu`u `O`o in February 1992. The flow originated from the episode 51 vent on the southwest flank of Pu`u `O`o. By the end of December, flows at Kamoamoa extended the shoreline about 300 m seaward, forming about 24 hectares of new land.
