This false-color image shows the LSTs at clear-sky pixels in the MYD11_L2 product retrieved from MODIS over Spain and Morocco on May 9, 2007. This level-2 swath image appears inverted because Aquas ascending orbit is not addressed until the data are projected into higher level Sinusoidal grid products.
The level-2 MODIS global Land Surface Temperature (LST) and Emissivity daily data are retrieved as 1-kilometer pixels by the generalized split-window LST algorithm. Optimum use of the LST algorithm is gained by separating ranges of atmospheric column water vapor and lower boundary air surface temperature into tractable sub-ranges. Surface emissivities in bands 31 and 32 are estimated from land cover types.
MYD11_L2 is swath data obtained in 5-minute sensor collection periods and is comprised of LST, quality assessment, error estimation, observation time, view angle, emissivities in bands 31 and 32, and the geographic coordinates of every five scan lines and samples. MYD11_L2 is provided as a daily unprojected level-2 product.
Version-5 MODIS/Aqua Land Surface Temperature/Emissivity products are Validated Stage 2, meaning that accuracy has been assessed over a widely distributed set of locations and time periods via several ground-truth and validation efforts. Although there may be later improved versions, these data are ready for use in scientific publications.

The table below lists the bit field legend for the LST Quality Indicators.
The QC science data set in this product provides the user with information on algorithm results that can be viewed in a spatial context for each pixel. The QC information tells if algorithm results were nominal, abnormal, or if other defined conditions were encountered for a pixel. The QC information should be used to help determine the usefulness of the LST data for a user's needs. The QC information can be extracted by reading the flags stored in a 16-bit unsigned integer. See Table 1 below.
NOTE: there is no FillValue for the QC SDS. This SDS should be used together with the LST SDS. If LST has FillValue 0, the 0–1 bits in QC have values of 10 or 11, other bit fields with 0 as undefined.
