ATSDR Announces Public Availability Sessions For The Midnite Mine Site

Stevens County, Wellpinit, Washington

Tuesday, August 10, 1999

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), a public health agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will hold public availability sessions for the Midnite Mine site, on the Spokane Indian Nation Reservation, on Thursday, August 19, 1999.

ATSDR will hold the availability sessions to discuss agency activities related to the site and to listen to health concerns expressed by residents of the area. The sessions will take place at the Spokane Tribal Longhouse, in Wellpinit, Washington, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Public availability sessions are not intended to be large-scale meetings. Instead, community members are invited to drop in at any time during the session and meet one-on-one with ATSDR staff to discuss health and site concerns. Attendance is open to the public, although individual conversations with staff during the session will be confidential.

Information gathered at the public availability sessions will be used by ATSDR in the development of a public health assessment for the site. Public health assessments report information about hazardous substances in the environment and evaluate whether exposure to those substances in the past, present, or future could harm people in the area.

Community/tribal members with additional questions, or those who cannot attend the meetings but would like to receive additional information, should contact ATSDR Health Assessor Steve Richardson or Community Involvement Specialist Maria D. Teran-MacIver, toll free, at 1-888-42-ATSDR (1-888-422-8737). ATSDR Regional Representative Ric Robinson can also be called for information at (206) 665-8562.
