Environmental Health Perspectives Volume 112, Number 10, July 2004
Environmental Health Perspectives July 2004

Nitrogen, in the form of nitrate fertilizer, is necessary to feed the billions of people on this planet. But the last several decades have seen an enormous disruption of the global nitrogen cycle by the addition of spiraling amounts of reactive nitrogen compounds to the environment as a result of fossil fuel pollution, biomass burning, and overuse of nitrate fertilizers. The Focus (p. A556) examines the potential long-term damaging effects of too much of a good thing.
