Fire and Invasive Annual Grasses in Western Ecosystem

A project funded by the Joint Fire Science Program

Field surveys are being used to evaluate correlations between soil characteristics and postfire dominance by invasive annual grasses at a wide range of low soil nutrient sites across western North America. Soil samples are being collected at high and low carbonate sites and/or high and low fertility sites in each region. Soils are being sent to Brigham Young University Soil Laboratory to be analyzed for available nutrients.

Objectives

  • Identify soil characteristics that are associated with high dominance of invasive annual grasses after fire over a wide range of ecosystems
  • Compare patterns of postfire dominance among a range of invasive annual plant species
