Surface-Water Field Methods Training Class
by by K. Michael Nolan, Caroline Frey, and Jake Jacobson
Water Resources Investigation Report 98-4252
USGS Training Class SW4230

Welcome to Version 2.0 of the web-based training class "Surface-Water Field Methods" This class is designed to be taken at your own pace. We hope it will provide you with a basic understanding of techniques the U.S. Geological Survey uses to collect data at streamflow gaging stations. We also hope you find the information included as linked material useful as general references. Water Supply Paper 2175 "Measurement and Computation of Streamflow" and Techniques in Water Resources Investigations Report Book 3, Chapter A6, "General Procedures for Gaging Streams" should serve as your primary sources for additional information. Links to complete copies of both reports can be found on the "References" page.

General Notes:

  • Class modules are linked to the agenda seen on the left-hand side of this page. Clicking on an agenda topic will bring up modules in a separate browser page.
  • Training modules load progressively. Modules will be displayed after 1/4 to 1/2 of the material has been loaded onto your computer. The remainder of the class will continue to load after the first screen has been displayed. Your browser security settings will have to allow you access to "Active Content".
  • You may experience problems if you try to go to later parts of a module before it has downloaded completely. Browsers used to view this training class must be version 5.0 or higher and have Flash Player 7.0 or higher installed.
  • All class material is available using the Agenda on the left side of this page. Various parts of the class require the Adobe PDF reader to view.
  • Class notes are provided as both text and spoken narrations. You will need speakers attached to your computer to make use of the spoken narrations.
  • This class is listed with the USGS National Training Center as Training Class - SW4230. Students will be given credit for this class upon navigating the class content and successfully completing the test on class material. Contact kmnolan@usgs.gov with questions or comments.
