Construction to begin in July 2008 on the Northwest Arctic Heritage Center

After seven years of discussion and planning, those efforts are coming to fruition.  In July 2008 the Ukpeagvik Inupiat Corporation (UIC Construction) will begin construction of the National Park Service Northwest Arctic Heritage Center.  When completed, the 12,350 square foot building will offer people of the region and visitors from around the world a high quality interpretive experience of the natural and cultural history of the area, a variety of educational programs, Inupiaq dances, and personal administrative services.

Did You Know?
In 1940, archeologist J. Louis Giddings traveled down the Kobuk River on a homemade raft, with three young Native men as guides. They found many ancient house depressions, including one at Onion Portage in Kobuk Valley National Park. The site is now believed to be about 10,000 years old.
