Brakes 30 CFR 77.1605(b) 56/57.14101(a) (a) Minimum
requirements. (1) Self-propelled mobile equipment shall be equipped with a
service brake system capable of stopping and holding the equipment with its
typical load on the maximum grade it travels.
This standard does not apply to equipment which is not originally
equipped with brakes unless the manner in which the equipment is being operated
requires the use of brakes for safe operation.
This standard does not apply to rail equipment. MSHA policy can be found here: 56/57.14101 77.1605(b) (b) Mobile equipment shall be equipped with adequate brakes, and all trucks and front-end loaders shall also be equipped with parking brakes. There is no MSHA policy for this standard. These standards apply to service and parking braking systems, their ability to effectively function, and requires that they be absent of defects. Issues to Consider in Determining Compliance:· Are the parking and service brakes capable of stopping and/or holding the equipment with its typical load on the maximum grade it travels? · Are all braking systems functional and maintained in good condition? · Does the air or hydraulic pressure bleed off after one or more applications to the point where the braking system will no longer stop or hold the equipment on the maximum grade it travels? · Are all brake cylinders and system devices functional and hooked up? · Are all in-cab brake actuators (levers, buttons, etc.) functional? · Are all in-cab gauges, indicators, low-air lights functional? · Do brake retarders function properly? Other issues covered by related standards: · Are there safety defects, other than braking systems, on machinery, equipment, or mobile equipment? (56.14100 or 57.14100 – safety defects, other than braking systems, associated with machinery, equipment, and mobile equipment) ·
Is the machinery or equipment in safe operating condition
or, if not, had it been removed from service? |
