Ultraviolet Index

The National Weather Service makes daily forecasts of the Ultraviolet (UV) intensity for 52 metropolitan areas in a product called the UV Index. The UV Index is a next-day forecast of the amount of skin damaging UV radiation expected to reach the earth's surface at the time when the sun is highest in the sky (solar noon).

The UV index exposure categories were changed in May 2004 at the request of the Environmental Protection Agency to make the categories consistent with those established by the World Health Organization. More information on the updated UV Index exposure categories.
