NCCAM Guidelines for ARRA Competitive Revisions

This initiative is one of several being offered by NCCAM to help fulfill the goals of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to help stimulate the economy through support of biomedical and behavioral research. Additional information about the Recovery Act and related NIH opportunities is available through the Office of Extramural Research.
NCCAM will accept applications for revisions that expand the scope of ongoing, NCCAM-funded research project grants addressing the areas of high priority listed below. In general, funds should support the addition of new personnel to the project, although funds necessary to ensure their effective involvement (e.g., supplies or small equipment such as computers), as well as essential small equipment (<$100,000) may also be requested.
Areas of Scientific Priority
Priority areas of focus for NCCAM ARRA competitive revisions include the following:
- Preliminary, developmental, or pilot studies ancillary to ongoing clinical research aimed at assessing the utility and validity of:
- Novel and potentially richer secondary outcome measures (e.g., NIH PROMIS, NIH Toolbox, or new neuroimaging technology)
- Standardized, objective methods to assess patient adherence to specific CAM treatment interventions
- Methods to assess fidelity or consistency of practitioner approaches and other aspects of protocol implementation
- Tools for assessment of important contextual factors for CAM mind-body medicine, acupuncture, and manual therapy interventions (e.g., practitioner skill, patient-practitioner interactions, and patient experiences).
- Preliminary, developmental, or pilot studies examining individual or population reliability and variability of outcome measures of importance to the evaluation of specific CAM interventions.
- Collection of additional data (e.g., costs) in ongoing clinical trials or observational studies that will broaden the depth and/or scope of outcome measures (e.g., to include cost-effectiveness).
- Preliminary, developmental, or pilot studies ancillary to ongoing research projects aimed at assessing the validity, utility, or added value of additional or novel methods to characterize the components, properties, or integrity of botanical/herbal/dietary supplement products.
Only applications that focus on these topics will be considered for possible funding.
Funding Priorities
NCCAM will accept requests for the following types of grants (activity codes):
- R01, R15, R21, R25, P01, and U01.
The following types of grants (activity codes) will not be accepted:
- All other activity codes not listed above.

Timeline for Review of Revision Applications
For FY 2009: Competitive revision applications will be reviewed by the end of August with notification of award by September 30, 2009.
