Morristown National Historical Park

"The monster hunger still attended us. Here was the army starved and naked and there their country sitting still and expecting the army to do notable things." Such was the winter encampment at Morristown, New Jersey as seen by Private Joseph Plumb Martin. The village served as quarters for the Continental Army on two occasions; the winter of 1777 and again during the Hard Winter of 1779-1780.

Lloyd W. Smith Collection

Lloyd W. Smith Collection

Lloyd W. Smith was an avid collector of antiquarian books and manuscripts. He amassed a substantial collection of such materials, which he willed to Morristown National Historical Park. Upon Smith’s death in 1955, the Park library received Smith’s entire collection of some 12,000 printed works and more than 30,000 manuscripts.

The following files contain item level overviews:

George Washington
Thomas Jefferson
John Quincy Adams
US Supreme Court Justice

James Monroe

These files are searchable and contain information regarding date, content and subject matter, and the recipient. References to “Fitzpatrick” indicate the bicentennial edition of Washington’s writings edited by John C. Fitzpatrick and published by the Government Printing Office in 1935. The most recent and expansive edition of Washington’s writings is currently underway at the University of Virginia.

These files will help enhance the search of these manuscript collections. Interns and volunteers compiled the database files during projects from 2006 to 2008.

Lincoln and Darwin

Lincoln and Darwin

"The Lloyd W. Smith archival collection contains nearly a dozen manuscripts from Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin.

Both of these men were born on February 12, 1809. Both had an enormous impact on their chosen profession, and both have been recognized as among the greatest minds of any generation.

To commemorate the bicentennial of their birth, Morristown NHP has developed this exhibit to introduce you to both men, and to provide you some insight into their professional lives.

Transcriptions of the manuscripts in our collection are provided along with accompanying historical notes. Thanks to our volunteer Laurie Johnson who created this exhibit."

George Washington by Gilbert Stuart

Did You Know?
George Washington lost his first tooth at 22. Over the next 35 years he lost all but one of the rest of his teeth. Dentures made for him were carved from hippopotamus, walrus, or elephant ivory or other teeth. Washington was buried wearing dentures made by dentist John Greenwood.
