Road Closures

With Highway 77 closed, Tonto National Monument can be reached from Tucson by:

Highway 77 to Highway 79 (Florence Junction) then Highway 60 to Globe/Miami. Take Highway 188 to Tonto National Monument.

OR


Highway 77 to Winkelman then Highway 177 to Superior. Take Highway 60 to Globe/Miami, then Highway 188 to Tonto National Monument.

Note: The Florence Junction route will take about 3 hours. The Winkelman route takes about 10 minutes longer, due to winding roads.

The Arizona Department of Transportation has announced that heavy equipment is working on the slopes above US 60 and at times there is a danger of rocks falling onto the highway. During these periods the highway will be closed. Drivers can expect delays of up to ten minutes from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

ADOT advises drivers to proceed with caution, obey all posted speed limit signs and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

Be sure to leave plenty of extra time when coming for an Upper Cliff Dwelling tour.

Did You Know?
There are a number of eyewitness descriptions of the Sand Creek Massacre. Among them the journal of John Dailey. Dailey fought at Sand Creek with the 3rd Colorado Regiment. On November 29 he wrote, "They [Indians] were peppered with gun ball and grape most effectually, slaying them by the hundred."
