Note: While the original publication dates on some of ATSDR's documents may not appear to be current, the information in the documents is valid and may still provide relevant information.
In 1992, as a result of health concerns expressed by residents in Bloomington, Indiana, two members of Congress requested that ATSDR address any public health implications of incinerating polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB)-contaminated wastes associated with six hazardous waste sites in that area. The ATSDR Bloomington PCB Project has been conducted in response to that request.
This document is the complete proceedings of the expert panel workshop convened by ATSDR to identify and evaluate all pertinent information related to the public health implications of human exposure to PCBs. Discussions during the workshop focused on three key areas: health effects of PCBs, incineration of PCB-contaminated waste, and non-incineration remedial technologies. The proceedings of the expert panel workshop are organized into four main parts - Introduction, and reports by the Health Effects, PCB Incineration, and Non-Incineration Remedial Technologies panels. The document also includes a section on Key Data Needs, and extensive appendices that include background information about the whole project.
Due to the size of the document, and to facilitate faster download, the different sections have been organized into 9 HTML files. Some of the chapters are split into two separate files. Keeping the size of the file at the end of any hyperlink small gives the user greater control over what material is viewed, thereby making it easier and quicker to read the whole document. Every effort has been made to keep the size of the individual files reasonable. However, you will not be able to print out the entire document at once. One way around this is by saving each file to a word processor, and then combining the files into one long document for printing.
