| Select the area of the State you are interested in visiting. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has put together a listing, by region, of areas in the State that have trails for cycling. We suggest that you contact the individual areas you plan to visit for detailed information concerning trails, hours of operation, and to clear up any other questions you may have before traveling to any of these wonderful places. When you select a link to a specific area you will access the online park brochure. At the bottom of each brochure is a phone number for the park or area. Rules for trail cycling:
NORBA, The National Off-Road Bicycle Association, offers the following code of behavior:
- Yield the right of way to other trail users. People judge all cyclists by their actions.
- Slow down and use caution when approaching or overtaking another trail user. Make your presence known well in advance.
- Maintain control of your speed at all times and approach turns in anticipation that someone may be around the bend.
- Stay on designated trails to avoid trampling native vegetation and minimize the potential erosion to trails by not using muddy trails or short cutting switchbacks. No cycling in designated wildlands. Avoid riding on extremely wet trails.
- Do not disturb wildlife or livestock.
- Do not litter.
- Respect private and public property, including trail and no trespassing signs. Leave gates as you find them.
- Be self-sufficient.
- Do not travel solo when backpacking in remote areas. Leave word of your destination and when you plan to return.
- Practice minimum impact bicycling by “taking only pictures and memories and leave only waffle prints.”
- Always wear a helmet.
- All persons 15 years old or younger are required to wear helmets while cycling in Maryland.
- Cyclists should assume the responsibility and risks for their own safety when visiting these areas.
