LACEY, Wash. -- The only way to apply for federal disaster recovery assistance is by calling the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) 's toll-free registration number at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the speech or hearing impaired.

Contacting the local emergency management office or any other disaster recovery agency will not automatically get an applicant registered for FEMA assistance.

FEMA's registration lines are open 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. PST, seven days a week. Individuals can also apply online at www.fema.gov.

"Anyone who had damage during the November 2-11 event could be eligible, and there's no way to know without applying," said FEMA's Christy Grant, individual assistance director. "Calling the FEMA registration line is the first step in finding out whether you qualify for assistance."

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident, initiates mitigation activities and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA works closely with State and local emergency managers, law enforcement personnel, firefighters, and other first responders. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
