According to FEMA Regional Director John Pennington, the grant money will be used to purchase firefighting equipment and to train firefighters.

"Our nation's firefighters are the first responders into almost every emergency," said Pennington. "Through this award program, President Bush has provided FEMA the opportunity to significantly enhance the Fire and EMS services they provide to Americans."

The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), a division of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), administers the Assistance for Firefighters Grant Program. The program assists rural, urban and suburban fire departments throughout the United States. A cumulative list of award recipients is posted at http://www.usfa.fema.gov/grants. Other fire departments in this area that have received AFG money since the program began include: Irrigon, Boardman, Pendleton, Arlington, Milton-Freewater, and Condon. Future grant recipients will be listed as awards are made.

The check will be presented to Jeffrey Adkins, representing Hermiston Fire and Emergency Services, 330 South 1st. Street, Hermiston, at 10 a.m., Oct. 28, by Barry Anderson, FEMA Region X CSEPP Program Manager.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
