BOISE, Idaho -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security/Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Bill Lokey will present a fire grant check for $35,451, as part of FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, Monday, 5 January 2004 at 5:30 p.m. (City Hall, 480 East Avenue North, Ketchum).

The FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program is designed to increase the effectiveness of fire fighting operations, firefighter health and safety programs, new fire apparatus, EMS programs and Fire Prevention and Safety Programs.

“Our nation’s firefighters are the first responders into almost every emergency,” said FEMA Regional Director John Pennington. “Through this award program, President Bush and Congress have provided FEMA the opportunity to significantly enhance the Fire and EMS services they provide to Americans.”

According to Ketchum Fire Chief Greg Schwab, the grant will allow the replacement of all obsolete turnout gear, and complete equipment upgrades for both volunteer and career firefighters. “The Ketchum Fire Department protects a population of 3,178 who live within the city limits and provides mutual-aid to the City of Sun Valley Fire Department and Wood River Fire and Rescue,” said Chief Schwab. “Much of our current gear is obsolete and this grant will allow safer and more effective fire suppression and rescue operations to our firefighters and supported communities.”

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
